Should you leave your heating on all the time?

Is it better to leave your heating on all the time on a low heat or simply put your heating on when you need it?

A lot of people believe that leaving their heating on all the time, on a low heat setting is more energy efficient than just putting your heating on when you feel like you need it. Most people believe that it costs more money to power up the system, however this is not true for most houses.

This is because your boiler will be continually heating up water when there isn’t necessarily a need. This is using excessive power and may cost you more. The Energy Saving Trust does not advise leaving your heating switched on all the time.

Should I leave the heating on low?

When you leave your heating on a low setting all the time, you are constantly burning fuel which causes a lot more heat loss as well as a lot more energy being used. Having your heating set to a low temperature will also make it harder for your home to reach its desired temperature.

In the average home heat loss can be quite significant, therefore the longer you have your heating on for the more energy is leaving your home.

Will leaving the heating on all night affect my health?

There are concerns that sleeping with your heating on could cause you to overheat during the night. It is recommended that the ideal temperature for a room to sleep in is 16 – 18 degrees. Temperatures over 24 degrees can negatively impact your sleep and make it harder to get a good night’s rest.

What is the cheapest way to use my heating?

As explained previously it is not recommended to leave your heating on all the time on a low setting.

You should only heat rooms that need it. If you know you won’t be spending much time in certain areas of your house. Turn off your radiators in specific rooms. For example, you may come home from work just to spend most of your time in the living room. It would be a waste of energy to heat other rooms in your home. Using thermostatic radiator valves can allow you to turn off radiators in certain rooms.

Another way to be energy efficient with your heating is to make use of heating timers. Heating timers allow you to get your home heated at precise times when you need it. You may decide to set your heating on just before you get home from work.

Is an economy meter cost effective?

An economy meter is a cost effective approach to using energy. This type of meter allows you to have two different rates depending on the time of day it is. Using your heating during the day will cost you more than using it at night. This can cost a lot less to heat your home by using energy during off-peak hours.

What is a smart meter?

Should I insulate my house?

Another wise way to save energy, would be to upgrade your insulation. Insulation is key in preventing heat loss within your home. It helps you reach your home’s desired temperature quicker and helps keep heat in. Older homes may have no insulation or it may be old and less effective. This means heat is more likely to escape at a faster rate. Upgrading your insulation cna prevent this from happening and save you money.

What type of boiler is most energy efficient?

The type of boiler you need depends on your home, the size of your home and the water demand affects which boiler is most suitable.

Is a combi boiler efficient?

A combi boiler is probably one of the cheapest options when considering a new boiler. A combi boiler, short for combination boiler, can either be electric or gas. This is the most common type of boiler as it has a simple design, requiring minimal space in your home as it does not need a water tank.

Is a combi boiler easy to install?

It is easy to install and is very energy efficient, which could potentially save money in the long run. Its main benefit is that it provides instant hot water straight to your taps and radiators, making it more energy efficient and sustainable.

What is a system boiler?

A system boiler works with a hot water cylinder, and it is not open vented meaning there is no water tank, and certain components that are usually on the outside of the boiler, are on the inside.

What are the benefits of a system boiler?

The benefits of a system boiler is that it can reach high hot water demand, for example, multiple showers or larger homes. However they do take up more space than a combi boiler. The hot water cylinder is normally sized to accommodate your typical usage, meaning if you are unexpectedly using a lot more hot water than usual, you may have to wait until the boiler can reheat the cylinder again as the cylinder volume can be depleted.

What is a heat only boiler?

A heat only boiler, also known as a regular or open vent boiler, heats up your home using a cold water tank, and a hot water cylinder as well as outside components such as feed and expansion tank in your loft.

Water can sometimes be lost in the system through evaporation which is why a feed and expansion tank will help maintain water pressure. They are a more conventional way of heating your home with cheaper installation costs. They are typically better in larger homes because they can supply hot water to multiple radiators or taps etc.
